The music legend celebrates 35 years free of addictions, with a moving message for family, friends and all those fighting for a better life
Elton John, one of the most beloved and enduring artists in the world of music, celebrated an extremely important personal milestone: 35 years of complete sobriety. At 78, he remains active, dynamic and always ready to share his message with the world, inspiring millions of people.
This year's anniversary was even more touching, as Elton John shared with his fans on Instagram a photo of handmade cards from his sons, Elijah and Zachary, and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. With the caption "Grateful for all the love on my sobriety birthday," he proved once again that the love of family and friends is the most precious gift.
It's no secret that Elton John has had a rough time with his addictions. He's been open about his struggles with alcohol, cannabis and – as he often calls it – his "worst best friend", cocaine. In 2019, his shocking life came to light through the biopic "Rocketman", where his tough life during his heyday was captured in every detail.
In interviews, Elton John has not hidden anything. He has admitted that his addictions almost destroyed his soul. His phrase on the CBS News show is characteristic: "My soul was black, like a burnt piece of meat, until I said 'I need help'. And in that moment, a little light turned on inside me and reminded me that I can still be saved." This moment was the beginning of a new life, cleaner and more meaningful.
The turning point for Elton John came in 1990, when his friend Ryan White, a young AIDS activist, died. The loss so devastated him that he decided to seek help. So on July 29 of that year, he checked himself into Parkside Lutheran Hospital in Chicago and began a journey to recovery that continues to this day.

In 2023, Elton John posted a photo with his sobriety chip, writing: “34 years clean and sober. My life has never been better”. In this way, he wanted to show that the decision to leave his addictions opened the way to a life full of meaning and joy. In an earlier interview in 1994, he stated characteristically: “My sobriety has brought me everything I could have dreamed of. I am a survivor. Life has pitfalls, even when you are sober, but now I can face them because I don’t have to run and hide.”
His honesty and open attitude towards recovery have become an example for many, especially for people who struggle with addictions every day. Elton John is not afraid to talk about his dark days, because he knows that only in this way can he inspire others to take the first step towards change.
He has never stopped offering help to other artists facing similar problems. He has openly supported Boy George on his path to sobriety, while in his autobiographical book “Me” he revealed that he was even a sponsor of Eminem in Alcoholics Anonymous. His attitude shows that solidarity, love and understanding are essential elements for any person who wants to change their life.
Years pass, but Elton John remains a shining example. His family, friends and fans stood by him every step of the way, giving him the strength to continue. It is no coincidence that each of his posts gathers thousands of messages of support, while his children's cards have a special place in his life. As he himself emphasizes, "The love of family and friends is what kept me strong."
