Annie Lennox tells how a simple moment on a London bus changed her life forever. From that day began a journey full of music, success and true emotions
Η Annie Lennox remembers the moment her life changed forever – and it didn’t happen in a studio or on stage, but on the top floor of a double-decker bus in London. It was a typical day, a routine commute, when she suddenly had the thought that would define her path. “At that moment I said to myself: ‘I want to be a songwriter. I think I can do it.’ And I got off the bus determined to pursue it,” she revealed to the magazine. Best.
This spontaneous "calling" became the beginning of a career that would establish her as one of the most iconic voices in British music. From that day on, Annie Lennox never looked back. She followed her instincts, wrote songs that marked decades and sold over 75 million records, achieving three number-ones on the UK Album Charts and a No. 1 hit on the UK Singles Chart as a member of Eurythmics.
Annie was never your typical pop star. She was always a little more thoughtful, a little more conscious, a little more real. Perhaps that's why her story reads more like a novel than a success story. When she met Dave Stewart, they first formed The Tourists, a band that laid the foundation for the collaboration that would follow. And together, in 1980, Eurythmics were born, the duo that changed the course of British pop forever.

The beginning, however, was not easy. At that time, Lennox and Stewart decided to end their relationship. Although they separated as a couple, they could not distance themselves from each other musically. “It was an exciting time, but also a painful one,” Annie admitted. “The song 17 again, with the lyrics “Who could not be together, and who could not be apart”, is literally for us. We could not be together, but we could not be apart from the music that united us.”
From that clash, magic was born. In 1983, the album Touch catapulted them onto the charts and put Lennox at the center of pop culture. In the years that followed, Eurythmics conquered a global audience with songs like Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Here Comes the Rain Again, and of course the timeless “There Must Be an Angel (Playing With My Heart)”, which in 1985 became their first and only No.1 single in the United Kingdom.
Annie Lennox was the personification of creative freedom. With her androgynous style, short blonde hair, and deep, soulful voice, she became a symbol of a new era in music. She never followed the rules — she made them herself.

In 1989, with We Too Are One, Eurythmics confirmed their success, while two years later, Greatest Hits came to seal a decade of triumphs. In 1999, the British music foundation honored the two artists with the BRIT Award for Lifetime Achievement in British Music, recognizing their influence on the international scene.
But behind the glamour, Lennox has always had an inner quest. Success has never made her forget who she is — a woman searching for meaning and authenticity. “I’ve always believed that to become what you want, you have to dream it first. To grasp it within yourself like a compass,” she said recently. And indeed, Annie has followed that compass every step of the way.
After Eurythmics disbanded in 2005, Lennox devoted herself to her solo career and charity work. She founded organizations to support women and fight HIV/AIDS, always speaking passionately about social issues.
And yet, despite the experience and recognition, she admits that the stage still scares her. “It’s scary and wonderful at the same time,” she says. “I always feel a tightness before going out in front of an audience. I used to be terrified — I carried the nervousness with me on stage. Now, I’m calmer. I feel like the audience is not in front of me, but next to me.”

Today, at 70, Annie Lennox doesn't chase the limelight. She lives quietly, creates at her own pace, and continues to inspire. Her influence goes beyond music – she became a symbol of authenticity, of a woman who dared to be herself at a time when few dared.
Her career is proof that the greatest journeys begin in the simplest of moments. A seat on a bus, a thought, a “I can” said without fear. That’s where Annie Lennox began, and from there was born the story of a woman who, without knowing it, would forever change the sound and face of pop music.
Annie Lennox doesn't just sing. She tells the story of life — in all its colors, shadows, and silence. And every time she takes the stage, even if she's nervous, she carries with her that original, pure feeling: that moment on the bus when she decided to follow her soul.
