Spotify is ushering in a new era of personalized listening experiences, giving users the power to “guide” its algorithm with the power of artificial intelligence. The new “Prompted Playlist” tool, initially available to Premium users in New Zealand, allows each listener to create playlists based on their own prompts, bringing a true revolution to the way we listen to music
Spotify has officially announced that it is moving into a new phase of personalization, where users can actively shape the algorithm that determines their musical choices. Until now, the platform passively learned each user's preferences, through the songs they listened to and the lists they saved. Now, Spotify is giving its listeners a voice: "Imagine a Spotify that doesn't just learn from you, but actually listens to you," the company says on its official blog.
The new feature, called Prompted Playlist, uses artificial intelligence to create playlists based on user prompts. Essentially, it's an AI experience that allows anyone to shape their musical environment with absolute precision by giving voice or written instructions to the system.
For example, a user may request "music from my favorite artists of the last five years, with songs I've never heard before" ή "pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute run, with a steady pace and a relaxing ending". His AI Spotify automatically creates a playlist based on these instructions, even adding descriptions that explain why each track was chosen.
The interesting thing is that users can directly intervene in the result — change the prompt, adjust the sound, or start from the beginning, whenever they want. Spotify allows the playlist to be refreshed periodically (daily or weekly), making the music experience more “live” and personal than ever.

The company describes the new feature as “the next Discover Weekly,” a natural evolution of its most popular personalized feature. Meanwhile, those who don’t know what to ask for can use the new “Ideas” button, which offers suggested prompts based on the user’s mood or activity.
The announcement comes just weeks after Instagram added options for users to adjust the content they see in its algorithm. Meta CEO Adam Mosseri said the idea is to give users more control over what they see.
But Spotify is taking it a step further, turning the listener into a “partner” with the algorithm. As the company explains, this is “the first step in a new era where the listener guides the AI, rather than being guided by it.” The goal is to create a more participatory relationship between human and system.

The Prompted Playlist feature is based on the same technology that was recently used to integrate ChatGPT into the platform, allowing users to request music or podcast recommendations using natural language. With this new development, the user can determine not only the genre and tempo, but also the theme, duration, and even the emotional tone of their playlist.
The company notes that this is just the beginning: even more sophisticated personalization tools are expected in 2026, which will allow users to “train” the algorithm in real time. Early tests of the beta program in New Zealand are already showing encouraging results, with users spending more time in the app and creating greater interaction with their music libraries.
A Spotify spokesperson stressed that this new technology “will empower people to express their musical identity in a new, more creative way, reflecting their mood, experiences and imagination.”
Prompted Playlist seems to usher in a new model of music experience, where artificial intelligence acts not as a selection tool but as a co-creator for each user. A step closer to a world where music will not be simply selected by algorithms — but will be composed by the personality of each listener.
