Marvin Gaye: How he made “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” his anthem

Notification

The story behind the iconic performance that sealed Motown's legacy

In Motown's rich history, few songs have left such an indelible mark as 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'Although it was written by the legendary duo Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield and passed through the hands of many artists, it was his interpretation Marvin Gaye in 1967 that turned it into one of the most iconic soul anthems of all time.

The song's journey, however, was anything but simple. As was typical for Motown, the song was initially recorded by multiple artists. The first to attempt it were the The Miracles in 1966, but their version failed to convince Motown founder Berry Gordy. He asked Whitfield and Strong to rework the song, adding more intensity and dynamism.

The second major effort came with the Gladys Knight & the PipsInfluenced by the spunk that Aretha Franklin had brought with her Respect, Knight and Whitfield gave the song a funk-soul energy that took it off. Despite Gordy's initial hesitation to release it as a single, the track climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, paving the way for something even bigger.

But, among these versions, there was already a separate recording. The Marvin Gaye, Motown's "favorite son," had already recorded 'Grapevine' in his own distinctive voice, giving it a slower but deeply emotional interpretation. It was a rendition that emphasized the melancholy and intensity of the song, creating an almost haunting atmosphere.

Despite its undeniable quality, Berry Gordy was not convinced that Gaye's version had any commercial potential. So its release was postponed indefinitely, while Gladys Knight's success stole the show. Producer Norman Whitfield, however, continued to passionately argue that Gaye's version should be heard.

The solution came when Whitfield managed to include the recording on Marvin Gaye's album. In the GrooveThe result was explosive. Radio stations began playing the song non-stop, audiences embraced it with enthusiasm, and it quickly became clear that Gaye's voice had given birth to something unique.

Under pressure from the airwaves, Motown was finally forced to release the track as a single. The song shot to the top of the charts in both the US and the UK, establishing Marvin Gaye as one of the most important artists of his era. In fact, it became Motown's most successful single up to that point, a record that stood until the arrival of the Jackson 5.

Over the years, 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' has been recorded by many other artists, from Creedence Clearwater Revival to The Slits. But no one has come close to the magic of Marvin Gaye's version. His voice, full of pain and passion, has made the song a timeless, true anthem of soul music.

Today, the story behind the song is a reminder that sometimes the greatest hits take perseverance and bold choices to see the light of day. Marvin Gaye not only made 'Grapevine' his own, he also elevated it to one of the most powerful chapters in music history.
