Billie Joe Armstrong froze on stage when he heard the notes of “Wonderwall”
Billie Joe Armstrong has learned to expect the unexpected from Green Day's live performances – but he probably didn't see this one coming. At the June 30 concert in Luxembourg, as part of the Saviors Tour, invited a fan on stage, as usual, to play the song together Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)The concept is familiar: he gives his guitar to someone in the audience who claims to know the song.
Everything was going normally – until the young man went up, picked up the guitar, and started playing… something that reminded me of Wonderwall by Oasis. Billie Joe looks on in surprise, smiles awkwardly and says, “You told me you could play this!”, trying to get him back in the right key. But the fan had other plans. And apparently, it wasn’t to play Green Day.
It didn't take the frontman long to figure out what had happened. "Oh, f–k! Nice try, nice try," he says with a laugh, takes back the guitar, and the fan leaves the stage with discreet escort. The audience adores the moment, which has already gone viral on social media.
This unexpected “Wonderwall moment” added to the long list of memorable moments of the current tour. A few days earlier, Billie Joe himself had gone viral for cursing a fan who sprayed him with water. And during their performance at Download Festival, he had frozen the set to openly declare that he considers the Trump administration a “fascist regime.”
Η Saviors Tour It started in May 2024 and has been to some of the biggest festivals in the world: Coachella, BottleRock, Download UK. At the same time, in May, Green Day got their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with Mike Dirnt saying with emotion: “Come see it and take as many pictures as you want – we will never say ‘thank you’ enough.”
And just like that, at a concert full of energy, a fan changed the setlist with a clever musical troll that, if nothing else, gave the tour another unforgettable moment.
